Terkini.id, Kabul - Surprising! American military commanders praise the Taliban, this is the reason. Although in general there are many who criticize the actions of the Taliban which are considered 'radical', there are also those who praise it. Surprisingly, the Chief Commander of the United States Military (US) in Afghanistan, Kenneth McKenzie, praised the Taliban for helping in the evacuation of troops in the capital Kabul.
However, he acknowledged that he regretted the departure of hundreds of Americans from Afghanistan.
"Actually (the Taliban) are very helpful and useful for us when we carry out (peace) operations in Afghanistan," McKenzie said at a press conference on Monday, August 30, 2021, reported by RT media via Republika.co.id on Tuesday, August 31, 2021.
McKenzie said the Taliban helped secure the airfield at Hamid Karzai international airport in Kabul. Although not perfect, the group is considered to have put in a very good effort and helped in the end.
However, McKenzie's remarks have sparked renewed criticism of the US government led by President Joe Biden for inappropriate troop withdrawals.
A number of incidents occurred after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan. Hundreds of civilians have lost their lives and the deaths of 13 members of the US military in last week's bombing at Kabul airport.
In addition to having to leave without completing the evacuation of all Americans in the country, the US also had to abandon thousands of Afghan allies. McKenzie's praise of the Taliban took critics by surprise.
McKenzie said the Taliban had been very pragmatic when the US military mission in Afghanistan ended.
The group not only shares the interests of the US Department of Defense in removing US troops, but he says Washington says it will prepare to attack the Taliban if it opposes evacuation efforts.
